Research: Potential Courses or Training Opportunities for Environmental/Conservation Work

For this post, I decided to consider another one of my intended objectives, considerations for potential courses, training or general events or opportunities that might further my knowledge of conservation and/or environmental areas.

Firstly, I found a very helpful website site that listed potential course or training opportunities related to varying environmental areas.

http://www.environmentjob.co.uk/

From this, I found a few potential options to consider for further refining my knowledge of ecology.

http://www.environmentjob.co.uk/course/48403-survey-techniques-for-protected-species

This position covered a broad scope of knowledge related to working with protected species and was available to entry level applicants.

During this course we will undertake the following activities.

• Reptile surveys
• Dormouse nest-tube survey
• Bat walk
• Badgers (visiting a sett)
• Walkover otter survey
• Mammal tracks & signs
• Presentation about water voles and great crested newts

Please visit our website for more information about this course and the other ecology courses that we run.

http://www.environmentjob.co.uk/course/49122-forest-skills-conservation

Another broader training position was this listing, which relates to forest ecology skills that range from variety of useful, practical principles when considering conservation work or identifying and/or tracking wildlife for photographic subjects.

Trees for Life is expanding its popular Conservation Weeks programme with two exciting new specialist conservation skills courses. Forest Skills Weeks offer a unique opportunity to restore the Caledonian Forest whilst increasing your own knowledge and skills.

On Forest Ecology Weeks you will learn wildlife identification and survey skills from our expert instructors whilst gaining hands-on experience in practical conservation techniques. The course will include tree planting, identification of trees, bird song, wildlife tracks, scats and other field signs, and biodiversity surveys in the Glen Affric National Nature Reserve.

On our Forest Horticulture Week you will have the chance to help conserve some of our rarest species, from the woolly willow which only grows in 12 places in the UK, to dwarf birch, a little-known but important part of the montane shrub community in the Highlands. You will practise techniques such as sowing seed, pricking out seedlings and planting in root-trainer trays, and take part in experimental work to propagate rare species such as aspen and dwarf willows.

Whether you want to gain experience to kick-start a career in conservation, or just want to expand your ecological or horticultural knowledge, these weeks offer the perfect opportunity to get up close to nature and increase your skill base in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

I also found another site that provided a few different courses and training opportunities to consider. This formed either long distance learning, part time, full time and online courses that would be flexible around other commitments.

http://www.trainingandcourses.com/

This covered a range of relevant subject areas:

Subject

  • All Conservation and Protection Of Specific Environments
  • Coastal Conservation and Protection
  • Habitat Management
  • Marine Wildlife Conservation and Protection
  • Marine and Coastal Conservation and Protection
  • Nature Conservation and Protection (Land)
  • Nature Reserve Management
  • Tropical Rain Forests Conservation and Protection
  • Wildlife Conservation and Protection

From this, I have highlighted a variety of examples which I felt were potential considerations for develop this knowledge or practical skill set, either in a broader sense or focused upon more specific aspects.

With this, I am also reflecting upon either methods of focusing upon particular core skill sets that feel would enable me greater access to environmental/conservation work or a means of narrowing down upon a specific subject area that interests me as a ecological field.

In addition, I am using this as exercise to see what is available to study and what costs are associated with such training, I will also need to consider how this might relate to available positions or opportunities.

Level 3 Conservation Award

Stonebridge College

Study level: Advanced
Course description
Man is creating an urban environment where so many goods are being concentrated that consumer desire, comparable to predatory instinct, is being over stimulated. From the moment a child can hear a radio or watch a television, this instinct is being stimulated and exploited by loud, noisy radio and television advertisements and garish neon signs and posters. These adverts do not merely beg person to buy, they aim to convince people that they need these things and cannot possibly live without them. This is the outcome of mass production that must find avenues to sell the goods. True, these methods create employment, but the fact remains, they are using up the earth’s animal and mineral resources at an alarming rate.

About Conservation

Conservation is the wise use of the earth’s resources, so that they can support, or sustain, the generations yet to come. This can be done in many ways and in different situations.

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma / Diploma (Routes in Conservation and Game Management)

Myerscough College

Study level: Advanced
Course description
The Subsidiary Diploma is a one-year, six-unit, course broadly equivalent to one A Level. Students can choose either to follow“habitat conservation” or a “game management” route. Both options follow the same first year units and provide a solid grounding in freshwater and wetland management, pest and predator control, estate skills, land-based machinery options and the principals of wildlife populations, ecology and conservation. An investigative project provides the opportunity to research a specific topic related to countryside management. Both options enable students to learn about fishery management as well as completing a work experience placement in the countryside sector.  Students who successfully complete the Subsidiary Diploma can, if they wish, progress directly to the second year of the Diploma.
Entry requirements: Students need 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English Language), or an Intermediate Level course (e.g. Level 2 Diploma at Pass including at least one Key Skill at Level 2), or equivalent qualifications. A keen interest in countryside and the environment is also needed.

Finally, I also came across a very concise and helpful site, that looked specifically as short and long course training in environmental/conservation fields.

http://www.countryside-jobs.com/Training/short_courses.htm

Upon inspecting short courses, there was a very in depth categorisation from which to specify what aspects of training you wanted to consider:

Administrative and Office skills: This includes areas such as software training; guide to Planning; contract management skills; budgeting, wildlife legislation, fundraising techniques but not basic skills training (literacy and numeracy etc.).

Community Engagement and Environmental EducationThat’s being trained in how to deliver community events and environmental education not the actual events themselves

Country Craft Courses This section covers craft courses which can be anything using traditional skills.

Countryside Management Techniques: The theory behind the use of the technique, see the Practical Skills pages for courses in how to apply these techniques.

First Aid, Risk Assessment and other Health & Safety related courses.

Horticulture and Small Holding:  Practical and theoretical training in gardening, permaculture and small holding.

Identification and Field Survey Skills – Mammals: Practical training in how to find and identify mammals, also training in survey techniques and classifications.

Identification and Field Survey skills – Ornithology: Practical training in how to identify and handle birds, also training in survey techniques and classifications including ringing licences

Identification and Field Survey Skills – Plants and Habitats: Practical training in how to identify higher and lower orders of plants, how to classify vegetation groups, also survey techniques. This page details courses where a full habitat is considered.

Identification and Field Survey Skills – Herpetology, Fish and Invertebrates: Practical training in how to identify, classify and survey reptiles amphibians, fish and invertebrates.  This is sort of how to ID everything else not considered above!

Photography: Practical training and theoretical workshops on digital photography and image manipulation. With an emphasis on landscape photography and the use of photography as a tool in identification.

Practical Countryside Skills: Training in the practical aspects of countryside management techniques such as dry stone walling and hedge laying.

Practical Countryside Skills – Machinery: Courses on the use and maintenance of machinery, includes driving courses

Practical Work Days: Spend a day or more helping to manage an area, conserve a species, improve habitats and gain experience in the practical skills required.

At this stage, I decided to focus upon general examples of identification and field survey skills, as well as photography training days. I skipped ahead to May’s event or  later, as this is likely the first reasonable starting point I would have to implement or act upon these situations/training opportunities.
